BUTTE, April 21.—The distinguished comedian Roland Reed and an admirable company of players will present the new comedy success, "Innocent as a Lamb," at Maguire's opera house this week. The clever comedian has a most congenial part in the character of Tobias Pilkington, a gay old stock broker of New York, and fairly convulses his audiences with his eccentric mannerisms, witty sayings and the extravagant situations in which he manages to place himself. Intended simply to entertain and amuse, the play admirably serves its author's purpose. Pilkington, who has a very proper wife, is a member of a secret whist club at Paterson, N. J., and in order to attend an important session of this organization he plans an alleged trip to Boston. At Paterson he is mistaken for another man and is soundly thrashed by a jealous husband, who seizes his victim's coat and starts for New York. The train is wrecked and the assailant is picked up unconscious. A letter written by Pilkington to his wife, to be mailed by a friend in Boston as a part of the deception, is found in the overcoat and reveals the wounded man's supposed identity. Out of this incident grow various complications that are finally straightened out satisfactorily. The play teems with genuine humor throughout the entire four acts, and is undoubtedly the best Mr. Reed has yet presented.
