CHICAGO, Aug. 3. (U.P.) Mandeville W. Zenge was identified today as the mysterious stranger in smoked glasses who disappeared from Ann Arbor simultaneously with the abduction and mutilation murder of Dr. Walter J. Bauer.
The identification was made by Oren Guiett of Flint, Mich., who was an out-patient at the university hospital and who occupied a hotel room adjoining that of the mysterious stranger who was registered as C. S. Jones but who police believe was Zenge.
Zenge maintained his composure under the additional incriminating evidence supplied by identification. Earlier he sought his freedom on a writ of habeas corpus but the hearing on the writ was delayed until Monday.
Guiett was brought here today from Michigan to aid investigators in the case and explained to them that he had seen "Jones" several times but never without his smoked glasses.
Accordingly police made Zenge don a pair of smoked glasses and dressed him as Guiett said "Jones" was dressed when last he saw him. Guiett was then led into the room.
"I want to see him walk," he told investigators.
Zenge got up out of his chair, turned his back on Guiett and started to walk across the room.
"Yes sir. that's the man, there," Guiett said.
The identification came after police had questioned Zenge for 24 hours without breaking his calm denials that he had anything to do with the abduction and subsequent mutilation of Dr. Bauer. The victim had been married only three weeks prior to his death to a pretty Kirksville, Mo. nurse who had gone with Zenge seven years.
Meanwhile the investigation took a new turn with the announcement that William Leinert, a cab driver, had been seized and was held incommunicado. Leinert was the driver in whose cab Zenge was cruising on the west side when he was arrested yesterday.
