EVIDENCE HERE
IN OPIUM CASE

Packed away and with big seals on it that are not to be broken until it is finally produced in court, the mass of evidence that is to be brought against the alleged opium smuggler, Norman B. Smith, who was arrested in San Francisco, arrived this morning on board the Wilhelmina in charge of Deputy Marshal Elmo Werner.

Marshal Elliot was supposed to be bringing the stuff himself but at the last minute the plans were changed and a deputy sent along with it. Although there is no way of finding out what the parcel contains it is believed that it is mostly made up of documents and among them the one that was reported as the "confession."

Deputy Marshals Towle and Elliot, who came with Smith, and Worner are expected to return tomorrow on the Sierra.
