On the 28th ult. in the evening, the superior mouth of Mount Vesuvius emitted an immense column of black smoke in the form of a pine-tree, with enflamed stones thrown high like sheaves of fire, accompanied by earth noises and violent earthquake shocks. On the 26th, a new mouth opened at the foot opposite Somma, with abundant lava flowing into the valley.
