The agricultural department is giving attention to deep plowing. Prof. Whitney, chief of the division of agricultural soils, was recently in Nebraska investigating the effect on the soil of deep plowing and of irrigation. Recently Secretary Morton received from the governor of Nebraska samples of corn of the 1894 crop planted deep. Notwithstanding the drought the corn was in excellent condition. The samples sent are of the Dent variety and two of them give 60 pounds net corn to 9 pounds of cob. They will mature inside of ninety days from planting.
