AUGUSTA, (GA.) MARCH 31.

On Monday night last, between 12 and 1 o'clock, the Jail in this place was broken open, and seven prisoners made their escape. They were confined on the second floor, and effected their enlargement by boring with a large augur, through the third floor, and dropping down from the window by twisted blankets. The night was dark and stormy, which considerably favored their exertions. Fortunately, however, as the last fellow was descending, he made a noise that awakened the jailor, who immediately arose, and pursued the fugitives. The pursuit was kept up with unremitted activity until about 9 o'clock, A. M. when five of the seven were apprehended, and once more inducted into office with the usual ceremonies.

The remaining two that have not yet been heard from, call their names P. Reyneau, and Andrew Lowry Freeman. Reyneau is a Frenchman, and was committed to jail a few days since for picking a gentleman's pocket in this place—he had recently arrived from Savannah, and is supposed to be quite an adept in the light-fingered science. When detected in picking the gentleman's pocket, he endeavored to explain it away as "von letel bagatelle—dat ne only vant to teach Aimercan gente-mon von lesson—dat ven he get a letei trigit ne voud give him back his book, and tell him 'tis very bad to wear his pockate outside de coate." He is about 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, of a dark complexion, with black hair and eyes. He had on a black close-bodied coat, and a brown surtout. Andrew Lowry Freeman, sometimes calling himself Andrew Lowry, was committed about two months ago for robbing the Franklin Mail. He is spare made, about five feet 7 or 8 inches high, black hair and eyes; he wore a brown surtout, and grey corduroy pantaloons.
