To the INHABITANTS of New-Hampshire.
COME let us Reason together, the Inhabitants of Boston have censured us for our inactivity in the important Cause of American Liberty, if the Censure is unjust let us properly resent it, if just, let us reform. To reform, when wrong, is an Honor to any Man or Body of Men, but to persevere when convinced that we are wrong, "makes Folly twice a Fool." I trust my Brethren in this Province are ready to hearken to Reason, and obey it when heard; I shall therefore humbly make the following Queries, and Observations.
Is not the Cause of Liberty which has engaged the Attention, & drawn forth the utmost Exertions of the other Colonies, of great Importance to the Inhabitants of every Part of North-America?
Have not the other Colonies sacrificed their Interest for many Months, and some of them for Years past, to preserve the invaluable Rights of America? Are they not still struggling with the utmost Ardour to disappoint the Machinations of our Enemies, and to preserve our just Liberties, that we may enjoy the Blessing in our Day, and hand them down to Posterity inviolate? Does not the Voice of Reason, and Justice, proclaim, that as we hope to be Sharers in the Blessings of Liberty, we should be ready to bear our Part in the Trouble and Expence of obtaining and securing it?
I have ever entertained honourable Sentiments of the Generosity and Patriotism of this Province, and that the Inhabitants would disdain any Character below that of true Friends to Liberty; and that notwithstanding any small Eclipse they may in Time past have Suffered, they will wipe off every Thing that would dim their Fame, and shine unsullied to latest Time in the Annals of America.
Union is well known to be the Strength and Beauty of Society; on Union depends the Liberty, Property, and even Being of America. The most flourishing Kingdoms and potent Empires have been laid in Ruins by Divisions. Let all Americans lay aside the little silly Distinctions arising from living in different Provinces, and look upon themselves as one Body Politick, one Society, whose Interests are inseparably connected, who must stand or fall together.
May every one use his utmost Endeavours to maintain this sacred Band to the last Day the Sun rolls round the World. And let all the PEOPLE say AMEN.
