SENATOR POINDEXTER.-Public Sentiment. —The opposition papers in the State-and they are with but three exceptions, all opposition, notwithstanding the People have always given large majorities for the administration-are making a great racket about two or three dinners which have been made for old Poins. If they are to be believed, the whole State may be set down for this old sinner--who has done nothing for the last few years- and the records may be ransacked-except abuse the President of the People. We will inform our friends abroad who it is that is feasting Mr. Poindexter. The nullifiers and Clay men! It may seem strange that the latter class of individuals have any thing to do with their old enemy ; but it must be stranger still to the People when they are informed that Mr. Poindexter is at this time zealously engaged in advancing the claims of Mr. Clay to the Presidency. We say now that Mr. Clay is to be the candidate of the nullifiers, and that Mr. Poindexter is electioneering for him. But who is feasting Poindexter in Natchez, Clay men and nullifiers-in Grand Gulf, Clay men and nullifiers-in Vicksburg, Clay men and nullifiers—in Raymond and Vernon, Clay men and nullifiers. A desperate coalition is endeavoring to make the impression abroad that the People will sustain their champion. The people are opposed to him and he well knows it. After he was done speaking in Raymond the other day, his friends tried to raise a shout of applause, but with the exception of two or three dozen voices out of 5 or 600, all was silent, and it must have been extremely mortifying to Judge Black to receive applause from the same source only. These Senators now feel that they have represented their own will instead of the wishes of their constituents-that they have set up their independence as servants !-in direct opposition to the expressed sentiments of the People of their State-that they have been the faithful representatives of a vast moneyed monopoly instead of the representatives of the rights of a sovereign State.
