Flames Leave 400 Homeless

Seward, Alaska, Nov. 25—INS—Federal and local officials raced against the weather today to find refuge for more than 400 persons left homeless by the $1,500,000 fire that destroyed half of Seward's business district.

Freezing temperatures of a typical Alaskan winter menaced the homeless persons as seriously as did the blaze that wiped out their residences yesterday. Army officials from nearby Fort Raymond aided in converting an American Legion hall, a skating rink and several lodge rooms into temporary shelters, but heating facilities were inadequate.
