LINES, BY A YOUNG LADY, ON THE DEATH OF A SISTER, ANN ADDRESSED TO HER FATHER, AT A DISTANCE.
On a smooth stream I seem'd to glide
No sullen clouds appear'd in sight;
Nor heard the billows' threatening tide;
Nor thought bright morn would soon be night.
But, ere I learned my joy so soon,
Or knew how quick those hours would spend,
Dark griefs appear'd, ere it was noon,
And Heaven depriv'd me of a friend
So sweet, so pure, so chaste her mind,
She was not form'd for living here;
With kindred Angels soon she join'd,
And we here weep for one so dear!
Is it in Heaven, a crime to mourn,
When ties are sever'd here on earth
Frail nature sinks, ere it has borne
The grief of such departed worth.
While, now, in distant lands she's laid.
May willows weep around her tomb
That solemn debt of nature's paid.
And mercy weeps her early doom.
But, if her sainted soul can see
In the bright realms of bliss above.
Or mingle in our misery,
We'll cease to weep for one we love.
