From Antigua we learn, that a cause of very great consequence to the sugar colonies, in particular to Dominica and its trade, was lately heard in the Court of Admiralty of that island.
The case appeared upon trial to be thus: William Donnel, master of a sloop named the Sarah, purchased 28 hogsheads and some tierces of French sugars at Dominica, for which he paid the duties required by the officers of the customs there, but not those imposed upon foreign sugars by the Act of the 6th of the late King George the second, and had them cleared out as English sugars for Boston; afterwards the sloop sailed, but being seized by one of his Majesty's ships, was delivered over to Capt. Norwood of the Princess Louisa who was qualified to act as a custom-house-officer, and who prosecuted qui tam for payment of the duties imposed by the said act.
The Judge, after a pretty long hearing, condemned the sugars, but reserved the consideration of the penalty of 100l. imposed on the Captain till the next Court.
