TO STEAL A SWITCH.
A Motorman's Attempt the Cause of a Bad Accident.
River Point, R. I., June 15.—Two of the Rhode Island Suburban Railway Co.'s trolley cars collided head on in this village at 3 o'clock this afternoon and five persons were seriously hurt and a number of others bruised and shaken. The cars were a Bloomer, bound from River Point to Apponaug, and one of the big vestibule cars, bound from Providence to River Point. The Bloomer party telescoped the closed car, demolishing the front vestibule and the controller and other apparatus on the front platform, besides smashing in the partition which divided the front vestibule from the rest of the car. The Bloomer car escaped injury as did its occupants, with the exception of the motorman.
J. H. Fisk, motorman on the River Point car, had both legs broken; E. B. Andrews, conductor of the same car had both legs broken and his hand hurt; Michael Hebert of Centreville, a passenger on the Providence car, had both legs broken and sustained other injuries; Henry C. Johnson, another passenger, had both knee caps broken, and Eugene Cahoone, motorman of the Bloomer car, was cut and bruised about the head and face.
Fisk, Andrews and Hebert were taken to the Rhode Island hospital and Johnson and Cahoone to their homes.
