MARTINSBURG. March 16.

Self defence being the first law of nature--on this principle, the following important query is submitted to the impartial and pointed consideration of the citizens at large, and freeholders in particular, not of the district of Berkeley and Frederick only, though more particularly, but to confederated America!

Is or CAN that candidate for a seat in the Federal Legislature, be qualified for engaging the confidence of, or discharging the high trust reposed, properly, for an unsuspicious and peaceably disposed people, who has publicly expressed a wish to be elected, "THAT HE MIGHT HAVE A CRACK AT THE FRENCH!"

Is this the Missionary of Peace? Is all his amicable sacrifices to end here? Even the most illiberal traducers of Mr. Rutherford, that long and well-tried friend, the real friend of peace, as well as of the people, cannot adduce so strongly a Disqualifying charge against him. The application is easy.
