Newbern, September 8.

Severe Gale.-About 4 o'clock on Monday morning last, we were visited by a very rainy and severe gale from the N. E. Soon after day light, the wind veered more northwardly, and a little after sun rise, it was at about N. N. W. from which quarter it blew in squalls for about an hour, with great violence. No damage however, of importance was sustained in the town, except the prostration of many of trees which within a few years have been planted in all the principal streets.

At Ocracoke, we are sorry to state, the damage done was more serious. Fortunately there were but few vessels lying in the channel-and these without a single exception, were driven on shore.

At Ocracoke, the hardest of the blow appears to have been from the S. E. It is stated that many chimneys and several houses were blown down on Portsmouth and at Ocracoke.

The accounts from Mattamuskeet and Beaufort, represent the gale to have been equally violent at both these places, and the injury done is said to be considerable.
