Bloodless Matador With Wrestling Partner Aspires To American Honors.
Unexpectedly appearing in America and without publicity it was learned yesterday that Italy's champion wrestler, strong man, and bull-fighter, Juan Mazzan, was in Bridgeport. In company with Gere. Palmini, also famed for his strength, Mazzan was found at a local hotel, where he stated through an interpreter that he would remain in this country until he could meet any who desired to dispute with him in public the championship honors of weight lifting. At the present time with his partner, a theatrical engagement for a period of three weeks has been accepted and he is now appearing at Poll's theater.
Italians in this city recognize the name of Mazzan with adoration, for he is the only man who in competition with the most proud Spanish matadors has entered the bull ring at Barcelona, Spain, and with bare hands killed the most ferocious bulls that the Corderillas furnish.
In Rome and Turin, Italy, where feats of strength are annually staged, he has carried off all honors. So strong in bone and muscle is this Hercules of 285 pounds weight that with the pressure of his jaw and one hand he is able publicly to twist the largest horseshoe into an unrecognizable shape.
