'Wake Up'
Before It Is Too Late
ATLANTA, Ga. They Seem Determined To Rule Or Ruin" is the title of a provocative editorial appearing in a recent issue of the Metropolitan Herald, a widely circulated weekly newspaper published in Atlanta. It said:
"Divide and conquer has long been a cardinal rule of would be dictators.
Sometimes it happens right in our midst without too many people realizing it until it is too late.
"We have seen in recent weeks a concerted effort to divide this state between the rural and urban areas. We have seen efforts made to divide the white and colored races. We have seen political use made of our courts. We have seen our governor misquoted and his statements distorted. We have seen the record of a former governor twisted and misrepresented.
"News columns and television and radio commentators have editorialized in what was supposed to be straight news. There have been incidents when news was not printed because of political implications.
"Efforts have been made to discredit any person or political leader who does not agree with this policy of divide and conquer. Encouragement has been given to efforts to stir up trouble, although this is in the form of trying to prevent trouble.
"Anyone who militantly opposes Communism, forced integration or extreme liberalism immediately becomes the target of the smear boys.
What, then, is back of all this? It is quite evident that this group means to rule or ruin the state, its good name, its educational and recreational institutions and even its economy. Georgians should wake up to these facts before it is too late."
