The Winchester Presbytery held its spring sessions in Martinsburg, commencing on the 7th inst. and ending on the 11th. The Rev. James M. Brown was chosen moderator, and Rev. Wm. H. Foote and Rev. Wm. N. Scott clerks. The number of attending ministers was less than usual, several being absent at the called meeting of the Synod which took place at the same time. Much interesting business was transacted, the most prominent of which was the ordination of the Rev. William Matthews as pastor of the church in Martinsburg, and the licensure of Mr. John Matthews as a gospel minister. From the reports presented, the state of religion within the bounds of the Presbytery was ascertained to be encouraging. In some congregations considerable revivals had taken place, and in others much seriousness had been and continued to be manifested. The meeting attracted numerous visitors, who will not fail to remember the warm-hearted citizens of Martinsburg, distinguished no less for their generous hospitality than for the christian virtues with which they adorn the religion they profess.
