Full Text

The following stanzas are said first to have appeared in the "Humourist," published in 1817, at Newbern. Judiciously administered, this preparation of mercury is undoubtedly a valuable medicine: but may not the frequency of its use, in less skilful hands, justly deserve the full force of the intended sarcasm?

Trumpet Poison's American Daily Advertiser.
APRIL.

Candidus auratis aperit cum cornibus annum Taurus.
VIRGIL.

O'er winter's long inclement sway,
At length the lusty spring prevails,
And swift to meet the smiling May,
Is wafted by the western gales.
Around him dance the rosy hours,
And tinge the masking ground with flowers.
With ambient sweets perfume the morn,
With shadowy verdure flourish high,
A sudden youth the groves enjoy.
FENTON.
