FIRE!

On Sunday afternoon last, about 3 o'clock, the seat of Robert Shewell, esq. known by the name of Painwick, in Buck's county, was discovered to be on fire. The family, excepting a few females, were at meeting, about a mile distant; immediately upon this unhappy accident being announced all the people there assembled, and the inhabitants of the vicinity ran to the scene of devastation with an alacrity which claims the highest praise; but although every effort was exerted, which a virtuous esteem for a worthy character (who had long resided amongst them in the capacity of magistrate) could excite, they were unable to stop the progress of the devouring element until it had satiated its fury by consuming all the inside wood-work to the ground floor, leaving nothing but the outside walls and doors and the household furniture, which the activity of those present preserved to rescue.
