TO MANUFACTURERS.
A package sale of domestic goods is to take place in this town on the 25th instant. We understand it is the intention to get up regular annual sales of this description, and it is well worth the consideration of manufacturers in this vicinity, whether it will not be to their advantage to promote this plan. Is it not a mistaken policy, that while Rhode-Island ranks proportionably as the principal manufacturing State in the Union, and while her capital offers every facility to the purchaser, she should be in the habit of sending her goods to market in other States, and suffering the loss of transportation, increase of commission, and an accumulation of expenses which might be avoided at once, by establishing a home market? An annual and extensive sale of domestic goods in Providence, would be certain of attracting purchasers from almost every part of the United States, and it would moreover give a character to our goods, and stimulus to the enterprise of our manufacturers, to establish the reputation of their goods, from which the most beneficial results might be anticipated. The experiment is certainly worth trying.
