Full Text

From the Providence, (Rhode-Island) Phænix.

The Election—It is ascertained that the majority for the Federal ticket in this state will be some where between one and two hundred: we are confident some of the federal candidates will not succeed by one. The exultation of the party on their ignoble triumph is beyond bounds; still it is probable the division of the spoils (offices) will occasion much bickering and heart burning, if it does not amount to an open rupture.

The State Manager and his Deputy, however, will have an eye to these things.

Two causes have combined to place the Federal party in power; first, a division among the republicans—and second, the illegal and fraudulent manufacture of near 200 voters (not freemen) in this town. It is a fact, that, setting aside the federal majority in this town, (and in good truth, the half of it ought to be set aside, and the other half well canvassed,) the republican ticket has a majority in the state of upwards of 300.

The independent and substantial yeomanry are republican to the core. It is also true, that had none but legal freemen voted here (the Federal majority in Providence was last year 337) our ticket would have succeeded.—On the whole, the Federalists are welcome to exult in their triumph, such as it is—for our own poor parts, we do not envy them such a victory: nor can we consider disgrace entailed on defeat occasioned by such means as they have resorted to.
