BRITANNIA: An ODE.
Occasioned by the Reduction of Martinico, and Composed by a young Gentleman of the College of New Jersey. Set to Music by another Gentleman of the same College, and publicly performed in Nassau Hall.
I
WITHIN these peaceful Walls retir'd.
Our Breasts with patriot Ardour fir'd,
We sing the Glory of thy Arms,
Britannia, drest in god-like Charms!
"Hail Britannia! Scepter'd Queen,
"Ever crown'd with Laurels green!
II
On Gallia's Coasts thy Thunders hurl'd,
Resound thy Vict'ries round the World;
While tumbling from his batter'd Car,
The Tyrant groans beneath the War.
Hail, Britannia! Let thy Power,
Rule the Main from Shore to Shore
III
Thy gallant Sons Intrepid stand,
And deal the Vengeance of thy Hand:
The Western Isles proclaim their Praise,
And Monuments of Honour raise.
Hail Britannia! grace thy Crown,
MONCKTON's Glory is thy own.
IV
Nor brazen Walls, nor veteran Force,
Can check thy Heroes in their Course:
In vain Canadia's Prince withstood:
Ev'n Ganges rolls a redder Flood.
Hail Britannia! Monckton's Name Sparkles in the Rolls of Fame!
V
Let proud Iberia threat and dare,
Her wealthy Sons with them compare;
Nor Pride, nor Wealth, nor ought avail,
While British Spirits scorn to fail.
Hail Britannia! Glory's Charms,
Ever wait thy conqu'ring Arms!
VI
Propitious Fortune, ever smile,
With sacred Pleasure on our Isle!
From Gallia's Crest the Plumage tear,
And curb the lawless Rage of War.
Hail Britannia! let thy Power
All the Sweets of Peace restore.
VII
While George adorns the British Throne,
Be nought but Peace and Glory known:
Let thence their mildest Influence shine,
Where HARDY rules with Arts benign
Hail Britannia! Goddess hail!
Peace and Glory shall prevail!
