Army To Sponsor Painting Exhibition
PORTLAND, Ore. - An exhibition of world famous paintings jointly sponsored by the Army and the Portland Art Museum will be held in Portland commencing November 26, it was announced by Major General Albert E. Brown, Northern Military District Commander.
The canvases to be displayed represent the finest work of the great masters, and are part of priceless collections owned by Berlin Museum which were found during the war in a salt mine at Merkers, Germany after the town's capture by the goth Infantry Division. The art treasures were brought to this country for safekeeping during the unsettled conditions that followed cessation of hostilities in 1945.
The paintings will be on display at the Portland Art Museum from November 26 through December 3, General Brown said, and their showing in this area has been arranged by the National Gallery of Art and the Portland Art Museum officials in conjunction with the United States Army.
The collection to be exhibited here will number about 100 paintings and will include the work of Monet, Durer, Rembrandt, Hals, Raphael, Poussin, Tintoretto, Botticelli and Titian. A small admission fee will be charged and the entire proceeds turned over to a fund for the benefit of German children in the American Zone of Occupied Germany.
Nearly a million people viewed the collection when it was exhibited at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C., last spring. Following exhibit here, it will be transferred to San Francisco and Los Angeles for suitable showing there.
