Secret service officers are working on the case and if their belief is correct the counterfeit is one of the best ever put out in the southwest, a number of the coins having been detected in Los Angeles by mere accident. The coins on the coast raised suspicion on account of their newness, old date, and being in such large numbers. They were to all appearances genuine until the millings on the edge were counted, which proved to be two short of those made by the United States government.
As yet no accurate manner of detecting the bad money has been received from Cananea, but bank officials yesterday stated that the coins could be readily distinguished from the genuine American issue by their ring, the coinage of Mexican silver having a different resonance than that of the United States issue.
