Full Text

The Ohio Nullification.—Two statements one from the Whig and one from the Democratic members of the Legislature have been published to the people of Ohio, in explanation of the character of the Bill, arranging the State into Congressional districts, which was the cause of the Whig members resigning in a body and breaking up the Legislature. The table shows the apportionment on which the difficulties arose. It gives the population of each district with the majorities given at the election of Governor in 1840, and those for President in the same year. Taking the Presidential vote as the test, the members of Congress would have stood thirteen Whigs to eight Democrats, according to the bill which was defeated by nullification. Taking as a test the vote for Governor at that time, the members would have been twelve Democrats to nine Whigs. The difficulty seemed to have been in determining which test was the proper one to take.
