NOT QUITE TRUE
"Canon City is having some experiences that are not at all usual, in that town of law, order and respectability," says the Pueblo Chieftain. "Since the news went around that a railroad was in the course of construction tough characters from all directions have been flocking in to prey off the graders and citizens, till the latter are wondering whether they are in Canon City or Skaguay." As a rule the Chieftain has been very fair and liberal about Canon City and Fremont county points but in this paragraph it is most unfair or inexcusably ignorant. No such condition has existed or is in Canon. Our city while in the verge of a prosperous era is as quiet and free from danger as at any time in its history. Toughs and vagabonds are unknown to our streets. There is no necessity of even begging as there is plenty of work for all. The Chieftain need but glance at the Canon paper to see its great error, and when this is called to its attention we believe that the generous liberal minded spirits that rule its columns will be quick to correct the wrong impression their paper is giving out.
