Plans Action on
Civil Rights

-PORTLAND, Ore. (ANP) A special educational program on civil rights is being planned for Portland by the Mayor's Committee on Intergroup Relations.

Key meeting of this new program to let the people of Portland know of the gross inequalities in this city will be held Jan. 11, its next regular meeting.

Newest group to support this action is the Minorities committee of the Multnomah County Democratic Central committee. On Jan. 4 this committee is holding a meeting for all groups wishing to further the President's Civil Rights program.

In declaring its program the minorities committee, headed by Ruth Haefner, pointed out the following status of discrimination in Portland:

Negroes are denied service in 90 percent of the city's restaurants. Only one skating rink is open to Negroes -- and that one one night a week on a school day. No amusement- park welcomes colored trade. One bowling alley admits Negroes. Only one first class hotel will take a person of a minority group as a guest.

Portland has a population of 20,000 Negroes. The Minorities committee is asking for laws "to protect the Negro citizen from the insidious persecution of discrimination."

In asking the Multnomah county Democrats to support the Mayor's Committee program, headed by the Rev. Myron C. Cole, chairman, the Minorities committee said:

"The best way to inform the public of the problems that Negroes face in our city is through the educational campaign proposed by the committee which Rev. Cole mentioned. The Democratic party of Multnomah county should be listed among the sponsors."
