ROANOKE COLLEGE, VA,
Dec. 24th, 1866.
Col. J. M. McCue: - Dear Sir. - It is under extreme necessity and with some degree of reluctance that I have recourse to this method of thus writing to my friends and philanthropic acquaintances.
About a week ago, I met with the misfortune of having my 'artificial limb' broken so as to be of no more service to me. Owing to the heavy expenses of College and the enormous expenditure under which I must go in purchasing necessary books, &c., cannot, in my present pecuniary circumstances, procure myself another leg, and continue my college course at the same time.
Rather than quit College under these circumstances, I think humanity and propriety will justify me in soliciting contributions from patriotic men who passed safely through the war for the purpose of restoring a substitute for said deprivation. I have communicated with Dr. Palmer, of Philadelphia, who says that he will furnish me a leg for $150. Then, my expenses to go there will raise the total expense to about $225 or $250. Now, by a liberal donation from all my friends to whom I shall write, I think the sum can be raised. They would, I know, if they could experience some of the inconveniences of using crutches, then be placed in their present condition, contribute liberally.
I leave it as an optional matter with you, and if you can, without much inconvenience to yourself, enclose a good donation for the said purpose, it certainly will be highly appreciated by the donee.
I found lodging and entertainment at your house last August when on my way to this Institution, but did not then have an idea that I would be under the necessity of asking a donation for this purpose.
Respectfully, yours, &c.
J. F. KISER.
