AND SANE DRIVING
LIEUT. AVERS, STATE MOTOR
POLICEMAN, MAKES
CHECK-UP
A campaign for more "safe and
sane" operation of automobiles in this
section has been launched by the
state motor police department, with
Lieut. C. H. Avers in charge of the
drive in this section. Lieut. Avers
stood at the corner of Walnut and
Meridian streets at Portland for about
an hour Tuesday night, noting violations
of the automobile laws. He
counted ten machines with but one
light and 26 with bright lights, or
those who fail to dim their lights
while passing another machine. At
Bluffton Monday evening he did similar
work for a period of two hours
and says the violations are less there
than in Portland. He counted eleven
machines with but one light and 18
with bright lights there.
He intends to note violations in the
other cities and towns that are in his
jurisdiction.
No arrests have been made, but the
officer promises to make them unless
motorists heed the warnings that have
been given relative to dimming lights
while passing another machine, keeping
tail lights burning, speeding, two
headlights on cars and having certificates
of title in the machine, and
two license plates on the automobile
or truck. Lieut. Avers would like to
have, and should have, the co-operation
of other officers in enforcing his
edict to motorists.
