The official dispatches from Gen. Scott in relation to the Battle of Cerro Gordo, have appeared. There is nothing in them of consequence which has not hitherto been published in our paper. The notice of the deeds of gallantry performed by our officers are somewhat more in detail, as also the items of losses, and the amount of forces on both sides. He closes his dispatch as follows:—
Our whole force present, in action and in reserve, was 8500; the enemy is estimated at 12,000 or more: About 3000 prisoners, 4 or 5,000 stands of arms, and 43 pieces of artillery were taken. By the accompanying return, I regret to find our loss more severe than was at first supposed, amounting in the two days to 33 officers and 398 men—in all 431, of whom 63 were killed, the enemy's loss is computed to be from 1000 to 2000.
I am happy in communicating strong hopes for the recovery of the gallant Gen. Shields, who is so much improved as to have been brought to this place.
I have the honor to remain, sir, with high respect, your obedient servant.
WINFIELD SCOTT.
Hon. Wm. L. Marcy, Secretary of War,
Washington, D. C.
