June 17. Thursday evening arrived his Majesty's sloop of war Viper, Houseman Broadly, Esq; commander, and brought in with him a French Privateer brig, mounting 14 six pounders, thirty five Men, with 13 Men, taken one day last week by his Majesty's Ship Lively, off Hispaniola; the Frenchman mistook the Lively for a merchant ship, so gave chase and engaged, but was soon greatly disabled, and obliged to strike; there was another Brig in company, said to be commanded by Monr. Palanqui; however he made off immediately on perceiving the error. Capt. Broadly also brought in a French prize snow, loaded with rum, sugar, &c. taken coming out of Port au Prince by his majesty's ship Princes Mary.
