OSTRICH TREE OF MONTEREY

In the famous cypress grove of Monterey, Cal., stands a unique tree known as the "Ostrich tree" from the resemblance to that ungainly bird.

This cypress stands at a point of the headland jutting out towards the ocean. Its branches seem to be flat on top like shelves and the trunk itself can be seen for miles. The grove itself is a natural curiosity that attracts thousands of tourists yearly.

Within these precincts of gloom and puzzling trails the sunshine cannot penetrate. Landmarks there are none but only gloomy, bending, swaying, silent trees, that neither whisper nor murmur.
