Full Text

CHARLESTON. Dec. 4.

Capt. Smith, in his tour through Virginia and North-Carolina, mentions a very extraordinary circumstance which attends the falls of Roanoke every spring, about the eighth of May: it is called the rock fight. This is occasioned by such amazing numbers of those fishes, there called bass-rock, coming up the falls at the same time to spawn, that a dog thrown into the water then would not be able to swim across, nor could live in it one quarter of an hour; you may actually see them crowded thick upon each other, even to the surface of the water.

This singular phenomenon continues for three days, but on one of those days in particular the agitation of the water is most violent, the whole river being in a foam.
