THE PRESIDENCY.
The National Journal. publishes a Table shewing the number of Electors that each candidate would have been entitled to, had the election been held throughout the Union, by districts, and had each candidate received electoral votes proportionate to the votes he received from the people. Thus, in Maine, Mr. Adams received from the people 6,870 votes, and Mr. Crawford 2,380. Now if these votes had given to each, electors proportioned to their numbers. Mr. Adams would have had 6.20, and Mr. Crawford 2.80. As it is, however, Mr. Adams receives the whole nine.
This calculation, when carried through the Union, giving to each candidate the number of electors to which he is entitled by his proportion of votes,-where the electors are chosen by the Legislature, the votes are proportioned in the same manner,-produces the following result; and proves what we have all along said, viz. :-That Mr. Adams received more votes, and was the choice of a greater portion of the people, than any other candidate.
Electoral votes proportioned to each candidate, according to the votes he received by the people-- omitting fractions:—
Mr. Adams 98
Gen. Jackson 86
Mr. Crawford 47. Mr. Clay 28
