Full Text

Extract of a letter from a Surgeon in the island of Goree in Africa. May 27. 1761.

The fire which happened here on the 14th of March consumed, in a few hours, the whole town to ashes (except three houses) together with several officers quarters. The inhabitants have suffered greatly. The instruments and medicines we regret the most; is a public loss, not retrievable in this country before the sickly season, which approaches. There was a good supply sent out for both garrisons, but unfortunately the vessel was cut from Senegal Bar by a French frigate.
