LISBON, in Portugal, August 21.

The Bellona of 74 Guns, the Brilliant of 26, who sailed from hence the 10 Instant on Friday last, the 14th Instant, in the Afternoon discovered 3 Sail of Ships about 6 Leagues from Vigo, whom they chased and got up with between 4 and 5 the next Morning; they proved to be the Hermione and Malicieuse Frigates of 32 Guns each, the Courageux of 74 Guns and 700 Men, coming from St. Domingo and bound to Vigo, for Intelligence in their Way home. The Brilliant engaged the 2 Frigates, and the Bellona the Courageux, who after a close Engagement of 50 Minutes struck: Upon which the 2 Frigates run away from the Brilliant, who was not in a Condition to follow them, being made a perfect Wreck of. They carried their Prize safe into Lisbon the 18th. The Bellona had 7 Men killed and 28 wounded; the Courageux 200 Men killed and 108 wounded, and 23 were drowned the Day after they were taken, by an Alarm of Fire on board the Prize, which was soon extinguished. She has on board 200 Ton of Goods, mostly Indigo, and is reckoned worth about £60,000. .... The Bellona's main and mizen Masts are so much damaged, that she cannot proceed to Sea without new ones. The above Ships had taken above 20 Prizes in their Cruize and on their Passage: among which was the General Clive, Ronquet, from Jamaica for London, and ransomed her for £5000.

LONDON, September 5. Letters from Lisbon, dated August 23, advise, that the French Consul there had not Credit sufficient to raise a Sum of Money to support the surviving Prisoners of the Courageaux taken by the Bellona Man of War, who amounted to upwards of 300 Men, and that they went begging about the streets; but the English Factory, out of Compassion, towards their Relief had raised a Subscription to the Amount of about £120 l. to be distributed among them.
