Ship George & Albert, in the Delaware River, 1st August.
The George & Albert, sailed from Cadiz on the 17th June and left there about 20 sail of American vessels, but did not bring a list of them. Flour $19 and dull. Corn 2 50 per bushel, scarce. Beef 20 and pork 28 per barrel, dull and plenty. On Thursday, 23d July spoke brig Blanche, long. 69, W. lat 37, 12, N. of Baltimore, 46 days out from Lisbon, her main top gallant mast gone. Same day at 5 P. M. spoke brig Nancy, of and from Philadelphia for Madeira, out 4 days. On 26th spoke the ship America, long 70, W lat. 36, 46, from Baltimore to Lisbon, 3 days out, all well. The English packet Eliza, spoke on the 18th of June. off Cadiz the ship Fair Trader, of Philadelphia, captain York, from Oporto to Gallipoli, all well. There was nothing new of importance in the political world when the George and Albert sailed, except the defeat of gen. Ballesteros by gen. Soult, nephew of marshal Soult, on the plains of Bornos, on the 1st of June The loss of the French was inconsiderable ; but that of the Spanish who had imprudently attacked the enemy in their trenches, amounted to about 3000, among whom was a number of their best officers, and the whole of the regiment of Spanish guards (Guardias Espanolas) one of the few veteran regiments Spain had remaining. Since the action Ballesteros has fallen back on the Hoyos de Malaga. The Gazette of Santiago of Galicia, states the Galician army [Patriot] to be almost naked and so very poor as to be entirely unable to act on the offensive. The French maintain their position before Cadiz, as usual, and almost every day throw more or less shells into that place from their Mortar Battery of the Cabizuela, but have as yet done very little damage. On the 16th of June the provisional exportation of specie was annulled by the Junta of Regency and an export duty of 5% per barrel laid on flour. Money continued plenty at Cadiz, owing to the great demand for provisions on the coasts of Spain and Portugal, which are generally paid for in specie by the coasting traders The holders of flour were expecting higher prices for that article on account of the embargo; but notwithstanding sales were very dull. The G & A stopped at Madeira 4 days which place she left 24th of June. There were only 2 American brigs (the Packet of Boston and a New-York brig, Capt. Sterling ) Flour $20 per barrel--Beef and Pork plenty and dull.
