FACTS REFUTE WET PROPAGANDA ABOUT
STUDENT DRINKING

By REV. ALMER M. PENNINGWELL

In answer to the oft-repeated charge of the wets that the young people of the country are going to the "bow-wows" in the use of liquor, a high school coach told me that he had coached for ten years in Chicago high schools and had not had occasion to discipline more than three or four students on account of liquor.

The principal of one of the largest high schools in Chicago told me in answer to my question, "Is drinking liquor by your students any part of your problem of social control?"—"We have absolutely no cases involving students in liquor drinking."

In answer to the same question the principal of the Evanston high school told me that they had not had in three years a single instance known to them of liquor drinking in connection with any school, social or athletic affair.

I put the same question to the dean of men at Northwestern university, and he said that the matter of liquor drinking is the most insignificant part of our problem of student control. He illustrated by saying that at the annual junior-senior dance, involving a thousand or more students, they had reported two or three individuals who gave evidence of having used liquor, only one of which being troublesome, and further described the two-day celebration following the winning of the football championship, which was in turn followed with a celebration of two dances at downtown hotels on Saturday night, a parade of automobiles loaded with students to the city on Monday, a gathering of five thousand students at a city theater, a bonfire on the campus attended by twelve or fifteen thousand people, a celebration following at Davis street, and a theater celebration with four or five thousand students present. In all this series of events only seven or eight instances of the presence of liquor were reported, with two individuals troublesome.

This, with my own rather wide observation among young people, convinces me that the wets are wantonly impeaching the character of American youth.
