APRIL 5.

On Wednesday arrived at Chester, the English sloop of war Camilla, captain Larkin, direct from Plymouth, with Gen. Maitland and several other British officers, passengers.

The following remarks on the arrival of Gen. Maitland, appeared in the Aurora:

"Various conjectures have arisen on this arrival at this time and place. The General's aid-de-camp or Secretary, arrived in town on Tuesday evening and it is said delivered dispatch to Mr. Liston.

"Yesterday morning reports were circulated, that the Spanish monarch agreed to accept of Portugal from its conquest by the French, and that in lieu thereof the French were to be put in possession of Louisiana and the Floridas.

"When Gen. Maitland left St Domingo to Toussaint, he transferred to him all the American property then in the British magazines.

"We also learn that an English Major of the name of Grant, has been appointed to reside at St. Domingo.

"From all these circumstances combined—with the reports that sedulously circulated—and the arrival of this officer in this city—it is evident there is some project in hand of the utmost interest to the safety and peace of these States."
