Full Text

At the Close of the Poll for Sheriffs this Day, at three o'Clock, the Numbers stood as follows: For Mr. Oliver, one Thousand four Hundred and fifty nine; Mr. Lewis, one Thousand two Hundred; Mr. Plumbe, eight Hundred and thirty nine. It has ever been an established Rule, without any Exception, that the Livery never will elect a Person who has been once set aside by a Common Hall into an Office of Trust.

The late Mr. Alderman Baker, a Man of true constitutional Principles, and great Ability, after one unsuccessful Attempt, could never succeed to the Sheriffalty; so much Respect have the Livery ever paid to the Resolutions of past Common Halls, as to suppose they never would put so severe a Censure on any Man without a very just and sufficient Cause. Mr. Plumbe's Confidence must then be very great to imagine that the Livery would cast so shameful a Reproach on their own Actions as to elect him, whom they have so repeatedly rejected, at any Time into the Sheriffalty.
