Event Details
The wretched Moses, once a Republican Governor of South Carolina, has turned up in Chicago, where he is under arrest under an assumed name on two charges of obtaining money under false pretenses. For two or three years he was in New York, having no business and depending for his subsistence upon borrowing and swindling. He associated with forgers, check-raisers and real estate sharks, and hung about a "skin" gambling saloon in Barclay street. He was suspected of being connected with a gang of forgers who issued notes on Brazil and other South American States. Finally he was sent in 1882 to Sing Sing for six months for swindling.
