THIRD MAN HUNTED AT BUTTE, MONTANA
William Mahan, Also Ex-Convict, Escapes Officer Who Finds $15,155 of Ransom Money in Mahan's Car: Waley's Father Is Weyerhaeuser Employee
Washington, June 10.-(AP)-J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said today his agents had ascertained that George Weyerhaeuser Jr., nine-year-old kidnapped Tacoma, Wash., youth, had been hidden at 1509 West 11th Street in Spokane, Wash.
Salt Lake City, Utah, June 10-(AP)-Federal officials were hot on the trail of one suspect in the George Weyerhaeuser kidnaping case today while two alleged confessed members of the gang were in custody of agents.
The west's greatest manhunt broke a tie pen last night when J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Department of Justice investigators, announced at Washington, D. C., that Harmon M. Waley, 24-year-old ex-convict, and his 19-year-old wife had been arrested here and had confessed participation in the $200,000 kidnaping of the young Tacoma, Wash., lumber fortune heir.
A widespread search for William Mahan, also an ex-convict, was centered at Butte, Montana, where he fled yesterday after deserting a motor car in which police discovered $15,155 of the ransom money.
Mahan was recognized by J. E. Mooney, a city detective, but the suspect escaped when the officer was halted abruptly in his pursuit by a bulldog.
Members of Mrs. Waley's family disclosed today that Waley was the son of a foreman in one of the Weyerhaeuser lumber mills in the Pacific Northwest.
Mrs. Waley, who was taken into custody with her husband, is 19.

Mrs. Waley was taken into custody when she allegedly attempted to pass a $5 bill, which was identified as part of the ransom money, is the daughter of George Thulin, member of an old Salt Lake City family. Relatives said she "had never been in trouble before," and that she married Waley around a year ago against the wishes of her family. They left for Tacoma shortly after the wedding.
Mrs. Waley was taken to the Federal building, where, after a grilling she was reported to have confessed, telling officers where they might find Waley. Waley was picked up at a house where the couple had been living. He also was reported by the Department of Justice to have confessed implicating Mahan.
DEATH PENALTY WILL BE DEMANDED FOR KIDNAPERS
Tacoma, Wash., June 10.—(AP)—"The law says death and it is death we will demand."
That was the statement and promise of Prosecuting Attorney Harry H. Johnston, of Pierce county, today after he received word that two of the alleged kidnapers of nine-year-old George Weyerhaeuser had been apprehended in Salt Lake City.
He declared the "snatchers" probably would be brought to trial in Tacoma in September and that the death penalty would be demanded of all the principals, regardless of sex.
