A QUARREL ABOUT AN OX-A MAN SHOT!
At "Cross Roads," in Worcester county, Md., on Monday of last week, two farmers named Peter C. Corbin, a man of 60 years, and Matthias Tatman, 30 years, had a fatal encounter. It appears they had been on very bad terms, having quarreled concerning the seizure of an ox by a constable on Tatman's premises, and on the afternoon of that day met and had a fight, in which Tatman was worsted. Corbin was then on his way to Newtown, but returned in the evening and found Tatman with a loaded gun waiting for him.
Seeing Corbin seated in front of a store, in the village, with some others, Tatman called out to them to "get out of the way," and seeing him separate from any of the bystanders, he leveled his gun and discharged the whole load into Corbin's bowels. Being a man of strong nerves and great vitality, Corbin stepped up to Tatman and dealt him three or four heavy blows with a piece of a board or some other wooden bludgeon; but by this time he began to feel his strength declining, and giving the word that he was "shot," he wheeled and took his seat upon a box. He died in about four hours.
Tatman was arrested and confined in the prison at Snow Hill.
The Newtown Record, of Friday evening, states the particulars of the affair somewhat differently. It and makes the conduct of the murderer more unjustifiable, if possible. It intimates that intemperance was the cause of the terrible affair.
