REPORTED EMBEZZLEMENT OF FROM $45,000 TO $50,000 BY COUNTY CLERK-OFFICE DECLARED VACANT.

Louisville, Ky., July 23.-William J. Semonin, the retiring county clerk was arrested this afternoon on a charge of embezzlement, it being alleged that he is short from $45,000 to $50,000. The arrest at the instance of Mayor Bingham caused a big sensation. Semonin, one of the officials whose office was declared vacant by the court of appeals in deciding the election contest cases and was elected as a Democrat, tonight stated that a full examination of the books would show that he did not owe the state over $22,000, the amount of collections for June and July which he had a legal right to withhold until given a quietus.
