Full Text

For these several weeks past expresses have been continually coming and going between Genoa and Paris, as it is said that the Court of France, displeased on many accounts with the Genoese Senate, has threatened to recall the troops now stationed in the garrisons of Corsica. If that should take place, it is said that the Genoese are determined to throw themselves into the arms of a certain Northern Potentate, who wants only a pretext to get a footing in Italy; and has of late, while he appeared as if in a profound slumber, been meditating a project which the hardiest politicians will be astonished at. In short, whispers are passing across the continent as if such designs were on the carpet as have not been thought of since the days of the Goths.
