Hilburn Case Will Come up Before United States Commissioner Taylor
J. F. Hilburn and W. F. Hilburn, son and nephew, respectively, of ex-Deputy Sheriff Bob Hilburn of Douglas, will be arraigned before United States Commissioner J. D. Taylor this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock on the charge of smuggling. Their arrest was made about two weeks ago and the case was set for a hearing on September 14, but attorneys in the case were unable to be present and the case was postponed until today.
Both of the defendants have been out under bond of $200 since the time of their arrest.
Their arrest was caused by United States customs officials at Naco, who alleged that they had smuggled horses over the international line from Mexico into the United States without the payment of duty. They have entered a plea of not guilty to the charge and their friends and the friends of the Douglas ex-sheriff say that they will be able to prove their innocence at the preliminary hearing.
