Arrived the regular trading ship Minerva, captain Clement, 56 days from London. September 7, at 5, A.M. lat. 48, 5, long. 22, 12- after a chase of 17 hours, it falling calm, was brought to and boarded by a French privateer ship of 18 guns, whose lieutenant-after examining our papers, using insulting language, and threatening to send the passengers on board his ship, called the boat's crew on board, ordering them to take our fresh stock, which they did, and plundered us of one hog, three geese, and five dozen of ducks and fowls. When told we had on board several ladies unwell, and requested they would not deprive them of the fowls, with the politeness of French privateersmen replied, "Let them eat salt beef?"
