IN THIRTY-ONE DAYS.
Time In Which Baldwin Engines Are Built For England.
Philadelphia. Feb 14 -The inability of English firms to turn out an order for four locomotives for the British govern- ment within an earlier period than four and a half months recently resulted in the contract being placed with the Bald- win locomotive works, of this city, and now that company has astonished our English cousins by completing the en- gines in 31 days It is said that the British machinists strike probably figured as somewhat of a factor in the period of time required by the English manufact- urers to finish the contract. but be this as it may. the Baldwins turned out the work at a record breaking pace Their original agreement did not call for the completion of the locomotives until March 6, but subsequently the Baldwins were asked whether the work could not be completed at an earlier date. To this inquiry a reply was sent. stating. "We will be able to ship engines by February 15 This astonished the. Englishmen. and they cabled that an inspector would be sent over to make a final examination of the locomotives, but the Baldwins ca- bled back that the engines would proba- bly reach their destination before the in- spector arrived This brought another cablegram di- recting the Baldwins not to ship the en- gines until the government inspector arrived, and the firm was obliged to comply, although the locomotives were completed and ready to ship within 31 days from the placing of the contract Even this time could have been broken had the Baldwins been told at the start how great was the emergency. The in- spector, who arrived on the Lucania on Saturday last. found the engines all ready set up and with steam on when he reached the works Several changes to conform to his ideas were quickly made, when the motive power was dis- mantled and boxed and went forward on the Stalheim today The urgency of the order was ex- plained by the requirements for the more rapid transportation of troops and munitions of war over the Soudan rail- way in Lower Egypt
