Since our last on this subject, we have conversed with a number of persons directly from this province. They confirm the information we have before published, of the abandonment of Austin's, and other settlements in that province, and of the return, and intended return of most of our countrymen who are not fugitives from justice. They represent the sufferings of emigrants to Texas as having been unprecedented, and no account they have seen has been exaggerated. The drought has been great, no rain having fallen since March, and the soil requiring greater moisture than that of Louisiana, and there as here, disease has made considerable ravages.
One of our informants, a gentleman of intelligence, confirms the report of its being the intention of the government of Mexico, to object to the running of the boundary line, as settled by the treaty negotiated at Washington, and intends insisting on the temporary line, agreed upon between Gen. Wilkinson and Salcedo in 1806.—This information was derived by our informant from the officers of the new government of Mexico, who had arrived in Texas before he left there. This intelligence, which from the respectability of its source, we presume may be relied on, creates great interest to hear further from the capital of Mexico.
We doubt not our government will take prompt and efficient means to bring his imperial majesty to measures—and if Gen. Andrew Jackson will accept the appointment of commissioner to run the line, we anticipate only opposition of words in the imperial newspapers.
