Allied Planes Reported To Have Sunk Two Enemy Destroyers And Damaged Another Ship

WASHINGTON, Oct. 28.-A major naval battle is being fought in the Pacific today which is expected to have far-reaching results, according to a communique issued by the Navy Department at noon.
Reports from the Solomon Islands area indicate that the Japanese fleet has been heavily reinforced and has accepted combat with United Nations forces.
United States planes are reported to have sunk two enemy destroyers and damaged an enemy battleship.
Contact on a larger scale has been made between American and enemy land forces in Guadalcanal with the result in doubt, said the communique.
